Porcelain veneers are a beautiful solution to esthetic and structural problems in your smile. They are thin porcelain coverings that are bonded to the teeth. They can be made to match the exact color and shape of your smile or they can be used to change the size, shape and or color, while providing natural-looking improvement. Porcelain veneers can be a great solution for several different cosmetic issues.
Porcelain veneers may be a good option if:
- Teeth are stained or discolored
- Teeth are crooked or misshapen
- Your smile has unwanted spaces or gaps
- Teeth are broken or chipped
Peple ask the difference between porcelain veneers and composite resin veneers. Both are an excellent option to improve your smile, but they both have different pros and cons.
Porcelain veneers - This is the most popular option because it provides the most strength and high longer term esthetics that improves the appearance of your smile. They do not chip or stain and are metal free. There are aouple of appointments involved as they are made by our ceramist with pre-planned guidance from Dr. O'Quinn and the patient with reguads to length, shape thickness and color. Porcelain veneers are the more expensive option of dental veneers, but extremely high-quality and value..
Composite resin veneers - This type of veneer is made from a tooth-colored resin that is usually more affordable than porcelain veneers. Less enamel needs to be removed for this type of veneer. They are hand sculpted in the mouth and polished in the same day. Composite resin veneers are not as strong as porcelain veneers, but they are easily replaced and repaired if damaged. There is more maintenance to this, but is still be a great option to create a beautiful smile.
Mixing materials- Sometimes we will use both materials. The composite bonding can be a transitional material to porcelain later. Also it can be used on the lower teeth with porclain on the top. Or even porcelain on the front and composite on the sides. Every person is unique in their desires and situation.
How its done
Most importantly the first step is to plan how you want your new smile to look. Dr. O'Quinn takes may pictures as well as models to help her create a trial smile that will look best in your face. When we have our desired trial smile and materials decided on we move to the prep date. Teeth will be prepared as needed to support the future smile. Impressions are taken for models on which the porcelain restorations are created . Temporaries are made and improved uopn from the trial smile. A mold of your temporaries will be sent to the ceramist to enhance again the shape, color and true life like appearance we want as our end result. The temporary veneers will protect your teeth for a few weeks, while the porcelain veneers are created. They will look great. Then, you will have another appointment to remove the temporaries and bond the new beautiful porcelain restorations to your teeth. Then you get to enjoy your new smile for years to come!
